Chief Executive - Rio Tinto Aluminium

Oscar Groeneveld is the chief executive of Rio Tinto Aluminium based in Brisbane, Australia. Oscar moved from the Rio Tinto Copper group in 2004. The aluminium group includes the Weipa bauxite mine, Boyne Smelters Limited, the Bell Bay smelter, New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Limited, Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited and the Rio Tinto Aluminium Yarwun refinery. The product group also holds interests in Queensland Alumina Limited and the Gladstone Power Station. In addition to his current position, Oscar also retains responsibility for Rio Tinto Japan and Kennecott Land.

A mining engineer by profession, Oscar joined the Rio Tinto Group in 1975 and his subsequent career has involved extended periods in coal project development and mining, aluminium smelting, and in copper, gold and base metals production. His diverse operating background equipped him for the role of head of Technology from 1997 until he was appointed chief executive of the Copper group in 1999.

Oscar has qualifications in engineering, science and management from the University of Queensland, University of London and the Royal School of Mines respectively. In 2006 Oscar was appointed chairman of the International Aluminium Institute.
